Robot ready houses

A great deal of current research (2016) is about how to create robots that can navigate in houses. Houses are, normally, very cluttered environments with not many clues for the robots to navigate.

There are many challenges for navigating a robot inside a house.

My idea is to invert the problem and start creating houses which are robot ready.

The robot ready house can have visual markers, Ultra Wide Band anchors to provide localization to robots, and even IoT sensors spread around that can help robots to achieve their functions, being them to navigate and clean the house, or simply to bring beer from the fridge.

The robot ready house can also benefit from special construction patterns that make it easier for a robot to move around, recharge, etc.

Things I would love to have in a robot ready house:

  • automatic washing clothes
  • automatic doing the dishes
  • inspecting if all windows are closed
  • helping to find lost items
  • cleaning the floor
  • cleaning the window glasses
  • cleaning the toilets
  • taking the garbage out on the proper days
  • places to receive packages/deliveries while nobody is at home

Perhaps a house that could accommodate elderly people and assistant robots would also be cool. The robot could be used to bring tea, coffee, beer to the elderly, or to help them to move around.

What are other possible uses for robots in your house?
How to adapt a house to be easier to be used by robots?
Leave any suggestion in the comments.
